No plastic bags on Mondays' drive

Kota Kinabalu City Hall together with six districts and one sub-district in the West Coast aims to reduce the use of Plastic Bags through a "No Plastic Bag On Mondays" campaign beginning June2010.

Those who cannot do without such bags will be charged 10 sen per bag at participating supermarkets, retail shops and hypermarkets every Monday. The money collected from the plastic bag sales would go towards funding environmental activities.

 

 

Kota Kinabalu to host World Tourism Conference

Sabah will host the prestigious World Tourism Conference on October 4th - 6th 2010.

This conference organised by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, was first held for the first ime in Manila, the Philipines in 1980 followed byAcapulco, Mexico in 1982. After an absence of 25 years, the WTC returned for the third time in Kuala Lumpur in 2007.

 

Tourism News update
1. The Land Transport Commission will be effective 1st June 2010- with this, all public services vehicles including tour coaches, taxis, etc will come under their jurisdiction. At the moment this will only affect peninsula Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak later.

World Heritage Day

This fall on 18th April 2010.

We should be proud that in Malaysia we are Blessed with four UNESCO recognized world heritage sites.

1. Mount Kinabalu, Sabah.

2.Mulu Cave, Sarawak.

3.George Town, Penang.

4. Historical City, Malacca.

Let us continue to educate and instill the spirit of conservation, protection and preservation for the heritage that we are entrusted with for the generations to come.

With the approval from the Registry of Society on the constitution, the following entrance and annual subscription fees shall enforce with immediate effect..

Ordinary Member:....................................Entrance Fee = RM 120................Annual Subscrption Fee = RM 100

Associate Member...................................Entrance Fee = RM 1000.............Annual Subscription Fee = RM 500

That means for new applicant the total amount to pay is RM220.

 

Stop use of non-biodegradable plastic bags

As announced by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Enviroment, with effect from January 2010, the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags within Government owned Tourism premises and facilities is not allowed.

Continuing Tourism Related Education (CTRE)

All lecture sessions of minimum three (3)hours duration comprising of two hours of lecture, one halfhour break, and an other half hour for written, questions and answers, and/or discussions.

All outdoor trips should be of minimum of four (4) hours.

Evalualtion forms and/or written questions and answer to be filled by all participants for all CTRE program.

If any participating member for CTRE finds the above criteria not fulfilled, please, inform any EXCO member or MTGC.

Dress Code (4th Schedule Regulation 10 Tourism Industry Act 1992) and Tourist Guide License/Badge.
Dress Code for Classroom
Man:- Shirt- Batik long-sleeves or Long-sleeves w/ Necktie. Pants: Long Slack (No Cargo/ Adventure Pants/ Jeans). Shoe: Smart casual (No Sneaker, Sandal).
Woman:- Baju Kurung, Kebaya or Proper ladies clothing with below-knee skirts. No slack or pants.
Dress Code for Field visit:
Man:- Similar or STGA Collared T-Shirt and Long Slack or Company Collared T-Shirt with long slack. Shoe: similar or sneaker only. No Sandal. Not while on duty.
Woman:- Similar or STGA Collared T-Shirt and Long Slack or Company Collared T-Shirt with long slack. Shoe: similar or sneaker only. No Sandal. Not while on duty.
• Participation is only confirmed after Fees have been received.
• Organizers reserve the right to disallow participation due to non-payment of Fees.
• Participants have a duty to reconfirm the program at least three (3) days before the Program with the Organizers.
• Cancellations will not be entertained, but replacements are accepted.
• Organizers reserve the right to cancel, amend, postpone or reschedule the above program due to any unforeseen or unexpected circumstances.

Proposed Amendment of STGA Constitution in Compliance with MTGC Code of Ethics and Constitution

This was approved by the Registry of Society and took effect from 26th March 2010.

Per Capita Dues: Under the restructure system of MTGC, every individual Tourist Guide will remit a payment of RM.40.00 per annum to be known as 'Per Capita Dues' to the council through their respective Tourist Guide Association which goes towards the following areas: 1. Benevolent Funds. 2. Insurance/Group PA. 3. Secretariat. 4. Newsletter.

Benevolent/Welfare Fund: The setting up of this fund as a necessary act as most TGs were self employed full time free lance practitioners as such did not subscribe to EPF & SOCSO.

The Benevolent Fund will benefit all participating TG by providing a minimum monetary benefit (as only RM.10.00 per member from PCD will be channeled to jump start the account) to them if for instance they are diagnosed with terminal illness or encounter unanticipated natural or accidental death.

Coverage: To indemnify the insured against any type of accident in the course of business or leisure, including accidents on or off the job, in or away from the home, commuting, traveling as a passenger on any commercial schedule airline, train, automobile or other private or public conveyance(s), worldwide 24 hours a day protection, subject to policy terms, conditions and exclusions.

b)Permanent Disablement..............................................RM 10,000.00

c)Medical Expenses (per accident).......RM 5,000.00

Free Benefit: Funeral, Creamation 7 Repatriation Expenses (Limited to RM2,000 per person).

Medical Expenses is inclusive of Chinese Physician/Bonesetter (RM250.00 per consultation).

Exclusion: Terrorism Cover, High-risk Sporting activities, drugs, HIV-related illness and sexually transmitted diseases.

Insurer: Mitsui Sumiti insurance (Malaysia) Bhd.

Rate: RM 10.00 (per person)

UNESCO Geoparks nomination for Kinabalu Park and Ranau

UNESCO Global Network of National Geoparks recently announced that Sabah's Kinabalu Park and surrounding Ranau area were nominated as Geoparks. Sabah Parks and Universiti Sabah are currently preparing working papers to be presented to the committee board. If the voted district meets the qualification, Sabah will house the second UNESCO Geopark in the country, after the Langkawi Global Geopark which was gazetted in 2007.
